Indian tabla legend Zakir Hussain, 73, is currently in a critical condition in the ICU of a San Francisco hospital, being treated for heart-related issues. Reports claiming his death circulated over the weekend, but his publicist swiftly confirmed that the acclaimed percussionist “has not passed.”
Hussain, who has taken the tabla to the global stage and earned numerous accolades throughout his illustrious career, has been in the hospital for the past two weeks due to complications with his heart and blood pressure, according to his manager, Nirmala Bachani. His close friend, renowned flautist Rakesh Chaurasia, expressed his concerns, stating that Hussain is critically ill but remains alive.
Amid the growing concerns over his health, Hussain’s sister, Khursheed, urged the media and the public not to spread false information regarding his condition. In a statement, she said, “My brother is deeply ill, but he is still breathing. I ask everyone to please pray for him. He has not passed away yet.” Khursheed expressed her frustration over the rumors circulating on social media and requested the media to refrain from making false claims about her brother’s death.
