Zakir Hussain in Critical Condition in ICU, Publicist Clarifies He Has Not Passed Away

Date:

Indian tabla legend Zakir Hussain, 73, is currently in a critical condition in the ICU of a San Francisco hospital, being treated for heart-related issues. Reports claiming his death circulated over the weekend, but his publicist swiftly confirmed that the acclaimed percussionist “has not passed.”

Hussain, who has taken the tabla to the global stage and earned numerous accolades throughout his illustrious career, has been in the hospital for the past two weeks due to complications with his heart and blood pressure, according to his manager, Nirmala Bachani. His close friend, renowned flautist Rakesh Chaurasia, expressed his concerns, stating that Hussain is critically ill but remains alive.

Amid the growing concerns over his health, Hussain’s sister, Khursheed, urged the media and the public not to spread false information regarding his condition. In a statement, she said, “My brother is deeply ill, but he is still breathing. I ask everyone to please pray for him. He has not passed away yet.” Khursheed expressed her frustration over the rumors circulating on social media and requested the media to refrain from making false claims about her brother’s death.

Zakir Hussain, the eldest son of the legendary tabla player Allah Rakha, has left an indelible mark on both Indian classical music and the global music scene. Over his six-decade-long career, he has collaborated with renowned musicians worldwide, blending Indian classical rhythms with jazz and other music genres. Hussain’s fusion of Indian classical music with jazz was exemplified in his 1973 collaboration with guitarist John McLaughlin, violinist L. Shankar, and percussionist Vikku Vinayakram.

The tabla maestro has received numerous awards throughout his career, including five Grammy Awards. His contributions to music were also recognized by the Indian government, with Hussain receiving the Padma Shri in 1988, Padma Bhushan in 2002, and the Padma Vibhushan in 2023.

As Hussain continues his treatment in the hospital, his family and fans across the globe are hoping for his speedy recovery. The outpouring of support from his followers worldwide continues to grow, with many praying for his health during this difficult time.

Hussain’s condition remains critical, but with his fans’ support and the ongoing medical treatment, the hope for his recovery remains strong.
