Madhya Pradesh Hospital Scandal: Fake Doctor Poses as UK Cardiologist, Performs 15 Surgeries, Triggers NHRC Probe

Date:

A major healthcare scandal has rocked Madhya Pradesh after a man allegedly posed as a renowned UK-based cardiologist and conducted 15 heart surgeries at a reputed hospital, leading to at least two confirmed patient deaths. The alarming incident, which took place at the Mission Hospital in Damoh between December 2024 and February 2025, has prompted a formal investigation by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).

The accused, identified as Narendra Yadav, reportedly impersonated Professor John Camm, a well-known London-based cardiologist, to deceive patients and hospital staff. A complaint filed in February with the NHRC alleged that Yadav performed multiple procedures despite having no medical qualifications, leading to serious complications and fatalities.

According to Chief Medical and Health Officer (CMHO) Dr. Mukesh Jain and District Health Officer (DHO) Dr. Vikram Chauhan, two patient deaths have been confirmed as potentially resulting from medical negligence. Damoh Collector Sudhir Kochar stated that a special team has been formed to investigate the matter, and refrained from offering further comments until the probe is complete.

Families of the deceased are now demanding answers and accountability. Nabi Qureshi, whose 63-year-old mother Raheesa died following an angioplasty at the hospital, shared his ordeal. “We were told she died of a heart attack, so we didn’t opt for a postmortem. But we later learned from the media that a fake doctor was operating on patients,” he told NDTV. “No one from the hospital or administration has spoken to us.”

In another shocking case, Jitendra Singh from Patera revealed that his father, Mangal Singh, was admitted on February 4 for a gas-related issue but was recommended heart surgery following an angiography. “He died within hours of the surgery,” said Singh. “Doctors were unavailable before and after the operation. They asked us to buy an ₹8,000 injection that was never administered.”

The NHRC has announced that a team will visit Damoh from April 7 to 9 to thoroughly examine the complaint. NHRC member Priyank Kanoongo confirmed that the team would inspect the hospital premises, meet with the affected families, and question officials involved in the case.

The revelations have sparked widespread outrage and raised serious concerns about hospital oversight, credential verification, and patient safety in the state’s healthcare system.
