A 28-year-old man, identified as Shanid from Mykavu near Kozhikode, Kerala, died on Saturday morning while undergoing treatment after swallowing two packets of MDMA to evade police. According to reports from PTI, Shanid had multiple drug-related cases against him at Thamarassery and Kodencherry police stations.
On Friday, when confronted by the police in Thamarassery, he attempted to flee and ingested drug packets in a desperate bid to escape. He was soon apprehended and taken to Kozhikode Government Medical College Hospital, where doctors performed an endoscopy and discovered two packets of white granules in his stomach. Despite medical intervention, he passed away at 11:20 AM on Saturday, hospital sources confirmed.
The exact cause of death will be determined following a post-mortem examination. Meanwhile, police have registered a case against him under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
Punjab Police Arrest Unemployed Drug Addict for Theft
In a separate drug-related incident, Mohali police in Punjab arrested an unemployed drug addict on Tuesday, March 4, for stealing ₹4.5 lakh in Indian currency along with foreign currencies from 10 countries, totaling approximately ₹8 lakh.
The accused, identified as Ankur Vaid from Sector 39-C, Chandigarh, was involved in a theft case linked to a shop that handled Western Union and MoneyGram transactions.
The complaint was filed by Sukhdev Singh, a resident of Sector 42-B, on February 22, 2025. Singh, who owns a computer shop in Phase 7, reported that on February 21, he briefly stepped out after lighting incense and locking his shop before heading to a Gurudwara in Sohana. Upon returning, he found the back door broken and large sums of Indian and foreign currency stolen from his office drawer.
A case was registered at Mataur police station under sections 331(3), 305, and 317(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). CCTV footage from the shop captured the suspect breaking in and stealing the money, leading to his arrest.
