Security arrangements have been significantly tightened across the national capital ahead of scheduled mock drills on Wednesday. The measures follow a directive from the Union Home Ministry in the wake of rising Indo-Pak tensions, particularly after the recent terror attack in Pahalgam.
Delhi Police has ramped up day and night patrolling, especially in areas with high footfall such as tourist spots and commercial hubs. Key locations including Connaught Place, India Gate, Janpath, Yashwant Palace, Gole Market, and other vital installations are under heightened surveillance.
On Tuesday morning, a police team reviewed security at Connaught Place as part of the preparations. “With security as a top priority and to ensure the safety of citizens, vehicle inspections have been intensified at major entry and exit points in the East district,” said DCP Abhishek Dhania. He appealed to residents and commuters to cooperate with the police during this period.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Surendra Choudhary added that foot patrolling has been increased to maintain public safety and boost community engagement. “This initiative is aimed at strengthening community policing and keeping a strict vigil to maintain law and order,” he said.
Senior police officials have instructed all Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCPs) to draft comprehensive security plans for their respective zones. Meetings are being held with Assistant Commissioners of Police (ACPs) and Station House Officers (SHOs) to bolster patrolling efforts throughout the capital.
“We have deployed both paramilitary forces and police personnel at Delhi’s borders with Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. DCPs are personally overseeing the arrangements in their districts,” a police source said. The source added that additional measures include increased motorcycle patrols, setting up of special pickets in crowded areas, and round-the-clock vigilance, especially during evening and night hours.
Interactive policing efforts have also been intensified, with beat officers engaging with local residents, commuters, and shopkeepers to address safety concerns and heighten public awareness.
During the mock drills, security teams will be supported by Bomb Disposal Squads and dog squads, conducting continuous anti-sabotage checks in high-footfall zones such as Palika Bazaar, Janpath, Khan Market, and areas near government buildings.
Rigorous vehicle checks are ongoing, with a focus on identifying suspicious individuals and monitoring rental or unregistered vehicles. Multiple pickets and checkposts have been erected at key access points as part of the comprehensive anti-terror measures being implemented.
