In a proactive move to address the deteriorating road conditions in Delhi, Chief Minister Atishi, along with several Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) ministers and MLAs, commenced early morning inspections of various roads across the capital on Monday. The inspections began around 6 a.m., focusing on areas including Okhla, Modi Mill Flyover, Chirag Delhi, Tughlakabad Extension, Mathura Road, and Ashram Chowk.
During the inspections, Atishi highlighted the urgent need for repairs, noting that many roads were riddled with potholes, posing significant risks to motorists. “The entire Delhi cabinet has been on the ground since early morning to inspect roads. All these roads are in a dilapidated condition, and due to potholes everywhere, people are facing traffic problems. Officials were instructed to carry out necessary repairs on a war footing,” Atishi stated in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
This initiative follows a review meeting held at the Delhi secretariat on Sunday, where it was agreed that all ministers would oversee road repair efforts in their respective districts. The Delhi government acknowledged that the heavy monsoon this year has exacerbated the poor state of arterial roads across the capital. As part of the repair plan, approximately 1,400 kilometers of roads managed by the Public Works Department (PWD) are slated for repair by the end of October.
Atishi emphasized the government’s commitment to providing pothole-free roads by the upcoming Diwali festival. “Under the guidance of Arvind Kejriwal, it is our endeavor to ensure all Delhiites get pothole-free roads by Diwali,” she affirmed.
The road repair oversight has been assigned to various ministers, with Atishi handling south and southeast Delhi, Saurabh Bharadwaj overseeing east Delhi, Gopal Rai managing northeast Delhi, Kailash Gahlot responsible for west and southwest Delhi, Imran Hussain covering central and New Delhi, and Mukesh Ahlawat looking after north and northwest Delhi.
Commenting on the state of the roads, Gopal Rai remarked on the deterioration following the incarceration of Arvind Kejriwal, saying, “Ever since the BJP put Arvind Kejriwal in jail, the condition of Delhi’s roads has worsened.” He added that Kejriwal had urged Atishi to expedite the repair works.
In further efforts, AAP leaders Manish Sisodia and Bharadwaj inspected the roads in the Patparganj area alongside PWD officials, while Gahlot focused on roads in Najafgarh, his constituency. “Despite repeated instructions to officials, there have been lapses, and the condition of roads is really bad. This condition of roads in Delhi is not acceptable at all,” Gahlot stated, assuring citizens that repairs would be completed promptly.
