In a shocking incident on Saturday morning, a 57-year-old businessman, Sunil Jain, was fatally shot by two unidentified bike-borne assailants in the Farsh Bazar area of Delhi’s Shahdara district. The attack occurred as Jain, a resident of Krishna Nagar and owner of a utensils business, was returning home on a scooter with a friend after a morning walk at the Yamuna Sports Complex.
Police officials revealed that seven to eight rounds were fired during the attack. According to witnesses, the shooters initially approached Jain under the pretense of alerting him about a dropped phone. They then asked for his name before one of them opened fire. Despite Jain pleading with the assailants not to shoot, the masked attackers fired multiple shots, killing him on the spot.
The accused fled the scene, and a police crime team is investigating the matter. “Further investigation is underway,” said the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Shahdara. Jain’s family has claimed he had no known rivalries, adding to the mystery surrounding the motive for the crime.
Deadly Fight Over Shared Toilet in Govindpuri
In a separate incident on Friday night, a dispute between neighbors over the use of a shared toilet in Delhi’s Govindpuri escalated into violence. The altercation led to Bikham Singh stabbing three people with a kitchen knife.
One victim, identified as Sudheer, succumbed to stab wounds near his chest and face. Two others, Prem (22) and Sagar (20), were severely injured and are undergoing treatment at a hospital.
Political Reactions
The two violent episodes have drawn sharp criticism from Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led central government of failing to maintain law and order in the national capital.
“Criminals have become fearless under BJP rule,” Kejriwal said in a statement on X (formerly Twitter). Referring to the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections, Kejriwal alleged that the BJP’s neglect of safety concerns is evident, saying, “The BJP is no longer capable of handling Delhi’s law and order.”
Delhi Police, which reports to the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, has yet to provide updates on apprehending the culprits in either case. Meanwhile, AAP has intensified its campaign, accusing the Centre of allowing violent crime to escalate unchecked.
Rising Crime a Key Issue Ahead of Elections
The recent surge in violent incidents has raised concerns among Delhi residents and is likely to be a central issue in the forthcoming Delhi Assembly elections. Authorities are under pressure to ensure swift action in resolving these cases and addressing public safety concerns.
