Birsa Munda’s Great-Grandson, Mangal Munda, Passes Away at 45 Following Road Accident Injuries

Date:

Mangal Munda, the great-grandson of tribal icon Birsa Munda, passed away at the age of 45 after succumbing to severe head injuries sustained in a road accident. Mangal Munda had been undergoing treatment at the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Ranchi, Jharkhand, after the accident on November 25. He was admitted with critical head injuries after falling from the roof of a passenger vehicle in the Khunti district.

According to Dr. Hiren Birua, Medical Superintendent at RIMS, Mangal Munda died from cardiovascular failure at around 12:30 am on Friday, despite being placed on a ventilator and receiving intensive medical care. “We did our best to save him but could not,” Dr. Birua said in his statement to the press.

Mangal Munda had been referred to RIMS from Khunti’s Sadar Hospital earlier in the week. Doctors at RIMS reported that he had sustained serious brain injuries, with blood clots on both sides of the brain. He underwent surgery on Tuesday, led by Dr. Anand Prakash, Head of the Neurosurgery Department at RIMS.

Following the tragic news, tributes poured in from leaders across the political spectrum. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sorrow on social media, describing Mangal Munda’s death as an “irreparable loss” for both his family and the tribal community of Jharkhand. “I am deeply saddened by the demise of Mangal Munda Ji, a descendant of Lord Birsa Munda Ji. His demise is an irreparable loss for his family as well as the tribal society of Jharkhand,” Modi wrote.

Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren and Governor Santosh Gangwar also shared their condolences. Chief Minister Soren wrote, “I am deeply saddened by the news of the demise of Shri Mangal Munda Ji, a descendant of Lord Birsa Munda, who was undergoing treatment at RIMS. May Marang Buru (supreme tribal deity) grant peace to the departed soul and give strength to the bereaved family.”

Mangal Munda’s death comes as a great loss to Jharkhand, as his family is deeply associated with the legacy of Birsa Munda, a legendary figure in the fight against British rule and a symbol of tribal pride. Birsa Munda, born in 1875, is known for mobilizing tribal communities against the British Empire, and his contributions are celebrated on the day Jharkhand was formed, November 15, which also marks his birth anniversary.

Mangal Munda’s untimely passing has deeply saddened the tribal community in Jharkhand, and his contributions to the social and cultural fabric of the state will not be forgotten. His legacy, tied to that of his great-grandfather, Birsa Munda, will continue to inspire generations of tribals.
