” Assam IPS Officer Shiladitya Chetia Succumbs to Suicide Following Wife’s Cancer Death”

In a deeply tragic turn of events, Shiladitya Chetia, a senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer serving as the Secretary of Home and Political Department in the Assam government, reportedly died by suicide on Tuesday. The heartbreaking incident occurred just minutes after he received the devastating news of his wife’s passing due to cancer, as confirmed by the state’s police authorities.

According to GP Singh, the Director General of Police, Assam, Shiladitya Chetia took the extreme step immediately after learning about his wife’s demise in the hospital. The entire Assam Police community is mourning the loss of this dedicated officer, expressing deep sorrow over the tragic events that unfolded.

“In an unfortunate turn of events, Sri Shiladitya Chetia IPS 2009 RR, Secretary Home and Political Government of Assam, took his own life this evening, a few minutes after the attending physician declared the death of his wife who was battling cancer for a long time. Entire Assam Police family is in deep grief,” stated DGP GP Singh.

Reports from Assam Tribune indicate that Shiladitya Chetia, who joined the Indian Police Service in 2009, had been on leave for the past four months, presumably to care for his wife during her illness. Despite efforts to rush him to the hospital, he was tragically declared dead upon arrival.

Before assuming his role as a secretary in the Assam government, Shiladitya Chetia served as the Superintendent of Police (SP) in Tinsukia and Sonitpur districts of the state, showcasing a dedicated career in law enforcement.

The circumstances surrounding Shiladitya Chetia’s untimely death are currently under investigation by the police. The tragic loss of such a respected officer has sent shockwaves through the community, highlighting the profound impact of personal struggles on individuals, even those in positions of authority and responsibility.
